Partners In Ministry sent four youth interns and three staff on a trip to the state capitol in Raleigh, NC, on June 29 to see democracy “in action.” They toured the House of Representatives, Senate, and floor with Representative Garland Pierce and one of the interns who work for him. For some of the youth, this was their first visit to the state capitol. During their tour, they learned just how many people it takes to “run the building” and all the work they do there. Rep. Pierce also showed them his seat on the floor and how they vote via buttons pushed. Also part of the building and tour was a chance to visit the museum, where they learned more about the history of North Carolina. Among that history was a look at what materials North Carolina outsources to well-known companies, such as Hershey’s and Minute Maid.

“The capitol was amazing! I loved the view and talking with Representative Pierce,” said Muhammed, one of the interns.

Other interns thoroughly enjoyed the chance to see the architecture of the House and exclaimed over the view from the top of the building, staircases, and elevators. Needless to say, they had a wonderful time and returned with many fun memories.

Our summer youth intern program is funded by the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC) and enabled these youth to go on this visit.
