On Thursday, January 15th, students enrolled in the SYSTEM After School Program at Partners In Ministry held a birthday celebration for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Students read his famous “I Have A Dream Speech” and a history of his life and ministry. Mr. Nyjel Graham and the IMANI choir of Scotland High School provided musical selections and talked to the students about their future plans and the value of hard work and practice. Mrs. Barbara Black, SYSTEM Coordinator, shared her powerful experience of marching in Selma, AL when she was just 20 years old. At the conclusion of the celebration, the students sang Happy Birthday and each enjoyed a piece of birthday cake. This program was coordinated by Mrs. Hazel Boatwright.
On Saturday, January 17th, SYSTEM and YES (Youth Empowered to Succeed) youth participated in a day of service. They were joined by the Women’s Volleyball team from St. Andrew’s University and some volunteers from the community. The students started the day by making cards for Senior Citizens in local rest homes in the community. After the cards were completed, the students helped out on the Partners In Ministry campus by completing a litter sweep, tidying up the classrooms, and even helping to organize several hundred rolls of tissue donated by Cascades Tissue Company.
